The Ginkgo Creative Residency is an ongoing collaborative project between Ginkgo Bioworks and Faber Futures. Established in 2017 the three month residency, designers, artists and are invited to respond to a theme related to synthetic biology.

The theme of 2022 Ginkgo Creative Residency was Play. The brief asked applicants to imagine what a playful practice of synthetic biology might look like and what possibilities it could reveal. The visual language of this brief drew from colourful lab infrastructure an modular children’s toys.

Ginkgo Creative Residency 2021
The 2021 Ginkgo Creative Residency explored the question: How have language, metaphor, and fiction shaped synthetic biology, and can we find new scripts to generate other meanings?
Responding to the theme of language through coding syntax, concrete poetry and genetic code, the refresh of the identity explores the roles of genetic code within narratives of de-extinction, food production and the use of yeasts as archetypes in synthetic biology.
